Billy Cart Derby… Are you ready?

Media release 2016: BILLY CART DERBY RETURNS TO GIPPSLAND

Grazed Knee Promotions in conjunction with Celebrating Easter (Rawson 2016) are pleased to announce the long-awaited return of an exciting youth event, which some years ago graced the hills of Boolarra and Neerim East.

Expressions of interest are now sought from youth groups, schools, and clubs involving energetic teenagers and creative human-powered vehicle designers.  The event will be on Good Friday (25/3/16) starting at 2:30pm. Teams of six will comprise a relay of two shifts each comprising a jockey and two pushers. Competitor ages must be from 13 to 17, with at least two of the team being girls

The course will be around the Phoenix Paintball fields at Mountain Rivers Tourist Park, Rawson. It comprises winding vehicular tracks with some short, steep sections. Each lap crosses bridges over Happy Jack Creek, past the crashed helicopter and sentry post checkpoints, and over the dam wall. Spectator viewing points will be serviced by a complementary 4WD taxi service contributed by Mountain-Top Experience.

HPV design will be unlimited, however dress code for competitors will include bike helmet, sunglasses, gloves and loads of lycra. There is no entry fee. Other rules will be provided closer to the event or probably made up on the day!

The winners’ prize will be a victory lap in King Faroud Bush’s ex-Saudi Arabian H1 Hummer. This amazing vehicle is almost as noisy as a V8 Supercar, and decidedly more impressive with its machine gun mounted on top.

The perpetual “Buckled Wheel” trophy will be presented during the evening program by the Hon. William Kaart, formerly of Eaglehawk, and aka “Billy from the Mulga”.  He will also present a rendition of his famous bicycle riding experience. Special speaker at the evening youth program will be Andrew Newman from Morwell’s Eternity Church.

Celebrating Easter is an annual three-day event centred at Bell’s Stadium, Rawson and run in conjunction with ESA Country Ministries. It is popular with church families interested in a fun and affordable camping weekend with inspirational speakers, craft workshops, musicians and outdoor activities. Highlights will be ‘Rosanna’s Raiders’ and the return of acclaimed country and western singers ‘Carter and Carter’.
